MANILA SV Batang Sampaloc dumped Quezon City TODA Aksyon, 76-57, on Thursday to sustain its rise in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball league) Sixth Season at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna.
Powered by former collegiate contributors Francis Escandor from La Salle and Didat Hanapi from Adamson, Manila pulled away after the third quarter, 56-36, and never wavered to post its third straight win in the round-robin elimination phase of the 29-team tournament.
Escandor hit 5-of-6 triple tries and finished with 19 points plus four rebounds and two assists, while Hanapi ended up with 14 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Slaughter gets extra rest
Fielded for just 12 and a half minutes, Greg Slaughter settled for eight points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Manila coach Gabby Severino, however, got contributions from many other sources such as James Sena and Carl Bryan Cruz who chipped in 10 and nine markers, respectively.
Renzo Navarro also didn't even score, but compensated with 12 assists and six rebounds.
Quezon City led at 18-12, but eventually yielded control, 25-33, following back-to-back triples by Fil-Am DJ Mitchell and Escandor.
Brandrey Bienes and Rafael Are scored 19 and 13 points, respectively, for Quezon City, which got clobbered on the boards, 33-53.
The MPBL goes to the Caloocan Sports Complex on Friday with a triple bill pitting Abra against Sarangani at 4 p.m., Quezon against Bicol at 6 p.m., and Paranaque against Caloocan at 8 p.m.
