THE Manila All-Stars edged out the Marikina Shoelanders, 76-74, to solidify its bid for the no. 1 spot in the semifinals of the Metro Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the Dapitan Sports Complex.
Jacob Andrhe Lim topscored with 22 points for the All-Stars, who rose on top of Division 1 of the tournament for players 16-and-under.
Counting their record in the classification round, the All-Stars are unbeaten so far in six games. They go for a sweep of the qualification phase and the possible top seeding in the semis when they meet the Makati Skycrapers on Thursday.
Also posting wins in the Day 2 of the qualification phase of the cagefest presented by the Metro Manila Sports Fest in coordination with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) under chairman Tim Orbos and the Metro Manila Council were the Malabon Ballers over the Las Pinas Home Defenders, 83-69, and the Mandaluyong Tigers against the Valenzuela Workhorses, 83-66.
The win by the Tigers gave them the early edge of joining Division 1 in the semis as wildcard entry.
The Ballers on the other hand, seized the solo lead in Division III of the meet which has Higer Bus as major sponsor.
Action resumes on Monday with the Caloocan Supremos taking on the Pasay Travel City, the MMDA Jr. Black Wolves facing the Muntinlupa Eagles, and the Navotas BIDA clashing with the Taguig Generals.
Former PBA star Pido Jarencio is league commissioner, while Globalport team manager Bonnie Tan serves as tournament director. Members of the organizing committee include Billy Reyes, Allan Ascue, Emerson Colina, Nelson Gatdula, and Richard Cheng
