MAKATI made a strong case as the team to beat for the inaugural championship of the Metro Basketball Tournament after emerging as the no. 1 seed in Division of the metro-wide cagefest for players 16-and-under.
The Skycrappers turned back the Manila All-Stars, 88-83, in a battle between unbeaten teams during the final day of the classification round Thursday at the San Andres gym.
John Louise Lugo finished with a game-high 21 points in leading Makati to a perfect 7-0 record heading to the crossover semis of the tournament presented by the Metro Manila Sports Fest in coordination with the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) under general manager Tim Orbos and the Metro Manila Council.
The top-seeded Skycrappers will meet No. 4 team Paranaque Green Berets in the Final Four that gets going on May 29 also at the San Andres gym, according to tournament director Bonnie Tan.
The Green Berets downed the Mandaluyong Tigers, 86-74, to secure the last semis berth in Division 1.
The loss was the first for the All-Stars (6-1), who fell to No. 2 and will take on No. 3 Marikina Shoelanders in the other semis pairing.
Meanwhile, the Taguig Generals emerged as the no. 1 seed in Division II, and the Pasig Green City the top seed in Division III.
The Generals face No. 4 MMDA Jr. Black Wolves, while its No. 2 Navotas BIDA vs. No. 3 San Juan Whatta Whatta.
On the other hand, the Green City arranged a semis showdown with No. 4 Caloocan Supremos, even as No. 2 Malabon Ballers battle No. 3 Las Pinas Home Defenders.
