FORMER PBA players Bonbon Custodio and Nino Marquez led the way as Macway Travel Club downed Philippine Christian University, 89-83, to win the 2016 MBL Open basketball title at the Rizal Coliseum.
Custodio, who played for Barako Bull from 2000-11, scored 16 of his 23 points in the second-half.
Marquez, who saw action for Air21, scored all his nine points in the payoff period.
"It was sweet 16 for Macway. We're very happy to add the MBL trophy to our collection," said team manager Erick Kirong, noting that Macway had won 15 other tournaments before the MBL victory.
Yves Sazon led PCU with 22 points, while MVP Von Tambeling added 16 for the Elvis Tolentino-mentored Dolphins.
Jack Corpuz contributed 13 points while battling Macway's 6-foot-9 import Maulu Nehru.
Macway, led by consultant Braulio Lim and head coach Manny Mendoza, finished with an 8-1 win-loss record in the eight-team tournament sponsored by Smart Sports, Ironcon Builders, Bread Story, Dickies Underwear, PRC Couriers and Gerry's Grill. The lone setback came at the hands of Our Lady of Lourdes Technological College-Takeshi Motors in the elims.
