LYCEUM showed up in the second half as it dispatched a game University of Visayas squad, 88-80, in Group A of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight on Friday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Pirates showed no sign of fatigue despite having played a day before in the PBA D-League, using their trademark pace in the third period to pull away from the proud champions from Visayas.
A three-pointer by Ralf Tansingco capped off a huge third period, where they turned a 38-35 lead to a commanding 66-49 spread heading into the payoff period.
Cesafi star Rey Suerte tried to make a game out of it in the fourth period but they could come no closer than eight points as the Pirates cruised to the victory.
“It’s about being mentally tough. We already played five games in about two weeks so that’s gonna take its toll on us as a team but it’s good for us cause it’s gonna make us sharp and mentally sharp. It’s really a challenge for me to motivate them because ang kalaban namin dito ay yung sarili namin,” said Lyceum head coach Topex Robinson.
“At the start we came out kind of flat. We were just cruising through it. We didn’t really pay attention to them until they started to wake up, and we got the win,” he added.
JC Marcelino led a balanced Pirates attack, finishing with 16 points, five rebounds and four steals – as the Pirates joined UAAP champion Ateneo atop the standings of the Group A.
