LA Salle Greenhills completed its playoff upset of top seed University of the Philippines, scoring a 95-90 win on Monday in the rubber match for the last semifinal berth in the 9th Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League Freego Cup at the Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.
Protecting a slim 49-46 lead, the Greenies outscored the Junior Maroons, 27-19, behind the hot shooting quartet of Troy Mallilin, Unique Naboa, Joshua Marcos and Harry Espinosa to take a 76-65 lead and held on for the win.
La Salle Greenhills forced a knockout match by beating UP, 94-87, on Saturday.
Mallilin had 32 points while Naboa and Marcos chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the Greenies set up a semifinal showdown with Chiang Kai Shek College.
Group B topnotcher National University battles Adamson in the other semis knockout match.
The Chiang Kai Shek Blue Dragons outsteadied the Arellano Junior Chiefs, 102-100, with John Galinato scoring 29 and Miguel Oczon adding. The Baby Falcons crushed the Lyceum Junior Pirates, 103-86.
The NU Bulldogs led by John Clemente, Terrence Fortea and Sydney Mosqueda used a fiery second quarter to trounce Hope Christian High School, 89-70, in the tournament sponsored by Smart, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste, Insular Square Cebu, and New Pioneer Auto Supply Cebu.
