LETRAN is not taking any chances and will not be fielding top player Rey Nambatac for the remainder of the Filoil preseason tournament due to a hyperextended knee.
Knights head coach Jeff Napa does not see it as a huge setback in their preparation for the NCAA Season 93, which unwraps on July 8, but believes it is an opportunity for other players to show their worth.
"Hindi naman negative," said Napa. "Kasi alam ko naman na everybody can step up. It's a matter of kailan lang sila mag-step up. Sobrang bata 'yung team na 'to. Kailangan lang ng proper guidance para sabay sabay sila mag-mature."
With one month left before the NCAA season, the Knights are still struggling, holding a 1-4 win-loss record in the Premier Cup, its lone victory coming at the expense of University of Santo Tomas last week.
Still, Napa says he sees positives. Against UST, the Knights saw the likes of Bong Quinto and point guard JP Calvo taking over in the endgame.
"Unti-unti ng lumalabas ang character ng team. Despite na we are nursing injuries, nag-step up naman 'yung iba," said Napa.
For the time being, the Knights await for Nambatac to reach 100 percent.
"Season na lang ang hihintayin namin. Ayaw na namin i-risk kung ano 'yung nararamdaman niya. At least, pagdating ng season, healthy na uli siya," said Napa.
