LETRAN came alive in the payoff period to take a 78-74 win over an undermanned Lyceum squad in the Filoil Flying V Premier Cup on Tuesday in San Juan.
After cruising through three periods, the Knights finally imposed their will on the Pirates led by Bong Quinto who bullied his way past the LPU defense.
JP Calvo then finished off the Pirates for good, scoring back-to-back baskets to push the Knights lead to 78-72 with a little over a minute left and fend off a gallant stand from Lyceum.
"We expect naman na tough but we didn’t play our game. Doon nagkaroon ng problema, huli na kami nagtrabaho," rued Letran head coach Jeff Napa.
"Marami kaming iaaddress sa game na ito na kailangan naming baguhin pa lalo na pag complete na ang Lyceum. At least maganda ang preparation namin sa kanila," he added.
Larry Muyang kept Letran (2-1) afloat for much of the match as he finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds while Quinto finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Christian Fajarito also notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards as the Knights outrebounded the Pirates, 62-38.
Calvo, Jeo Ambohot and Jerrick Balanza highlighted a balanced Letran attack as they all added nine points apiece.
Yancy Remulla led the Pirates with 18 points while Rhanzelle Yong added 15 as they once again played minus CJ Perez, Mike Nzeusseu, MJ Ayaay, and the Marcelino twins.
