UNIVERSITY of the Visayas and University of San Carlos completed the semifinal roster with wins on Friday in the 13th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the University of San Jose-Recoletos gym.
Import Mike Harry and Chris Perolino each scored 14 points as UV beat University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 72-63. USPF is now without a win for two straight seasons.
USC defeated University of Cebu, 79-69, in an intense game that saw the USC assistant coach Junthy Valenzuela and UC player Kenneth Niones ejected.
USC guard Victor Rabat drove hard on a fastbreak and suffered a horrendous fall after getting fouled by Niones. Seeing his player tumble, Valenzuela vented out his frustrations by taking a chair, slamming it on the playing court and shattering it to pieces.
The Warriors hardly missed Valenzuela, starting the third period with an 11-2 run to put them on top by for a 14-point lead, 55-41.
Import Ahmed Salihou scored six in that rally, while point guard Dave Guardiario capped the run with a three-pointer.
UC fought back with a 13-3 run to get them within four, 54-58, heading to the final stretch, but USC managed to stay ahead.
Two free-throws by Dominic Adlawan, and baskets by Christian Laude and Salihou gave the Warriors a 77-67 lead with 3:16 left.
Salihou had 17 points and 19 rebounds, Stephen Que added 14 and Miguel Plata chipped in 12.
Villanueva was the lone player to reach double-figures for UC with 25 points and seven boards.
