Lancers, Warriors complete Cesafi semis cast

    Sep 7, 2013

UNIVERSITY of the Visayas and University of San Carlos completed the semifinal roster with wins on Friday in the 13th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the University of San Jose-Recoletos gym.

Import Mike Harry and Chris Perolino each scored 14 points as UV beat University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 72-63. USPF is now without a win for two straight seasons.

USC defeated University of Cebu, 79-69, in an intense game that saw the USC assistant coach Junthy Valenzuela and UC player Kenneth Niones ejected.

USC guard Victor Rabat drove hard on a fastbreak and suffered a horrendous fall after getting fouled by Niones. Seeing his player tumble, Valenzuela vented out his frustrations by taking a chair, slamming it on the playing court and shattering it to pieces.

The Warriors hardly missed Valenzuela, starting the third period with an 11-2 run to put them on top by for a 14-point lead, 55-41.

Import Ahmed Salihou scored six in that rally, while point guard Dave Guardiario capped the run with a three-pointer.

UC fought back with a 13-3 run to get them within four, 54-58, heading to the final stretch, but USC managed to stay ahead.

Two free-throws by Dominic Adlawan, and baskets by Christian Laude and Salihou gave the Warriors a 77-67 lead with 3:16 left.

Salihou had 17 points and 19 rebounds, Stephen Que added 14 and Miguel Plata chipped in 12.

Villanueva was the lone player to reach double-figures for UC with 25 points and seven boards.
