UNIVERSITY of the Visayas secured the second seed in the quarterfinals with an 82-68 win over Cebu Institute of Technology-University in the 13th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament Thursday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Lancers starting point guard John Abad injured his ankle in a collision with Wildcats guard Floyd Taboada in the first period, but the UV squad still proved too much for CIT-U.
Five UV players scored in double-figures led by African imports Steve Akomo and Mike Harry Nzuesseu who had 14 and 13 points, respectively. Forward Chris Perolino added 12 while Arvie Cabanero and Wowie Escosio chipped in 10 each for the Lancers, who finished the elimination round with a 5-1 win-loss record.
UV will face the seventh-ranked team in the quarterfinal round next week, armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.
The Wildcats were still within range in the third period as Taboada’s nine-point binge capped by a three-point play put them within four, 42-46, with 2:45 remaining. But the Lancers finished that period strong and started the fourth with six straight points coming from Harry and Franz Arong that made it 60-45.
Taboada scored 25 points while rookie Joshua dela Cerna had 23 markers for CIT-U, which fell to 1-4.
