UNIVERSITY of the Visayas extended its season as it edged defending champion Southwestern University, 89-82, in a double-overtime thriller in Game Three of the 13th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
It was UV’s first win in six games against SWU this season, ending the Cobras’14-game winning run.
More important, the Lancers prevented SWU from sweeping the best-of-five finals series.
UV managed to overhaul a 51-62 deficit, taking advantage of the absence in the endgame of SWU import Landry Sanjo, who fouled out with 4:42 left in regulation.
John Abad, Alfred Codilla and import Mike Nzuesseu came up with the crucial points in the second overtime for UV, which goes for the equalizer in Game Four on Tuesday afternoon.
With no Sanjo standing between him and the basket, Nzuesseu piled on the points and finished with 26 capped by a lay-up that put UV in front, 85-82, with 48.7 seconds left in the second extra session. After a turnover by SWU's other reinforcement Fabrice Siewe, Abad put the game on ice with four free-throws. He finished with 20 points.
Codilla added 11 while surprise starter Leonard Santillan tallied 10 points, four rebounds and two steals.
“I just told them to stay focused and stick to the gameplan. Malaking factor ang pagkawala ni Sanjo because he really is a presence inside. Si (Leonard) Santillan naman, ang ganda ng pinapakita sa practice which is why the coaching staff decided to start him. And we’re happy that with his production,” said UV coach Felix Belano.
SWU led, 62-51, after a spin move and lay-up by MVP Mark Jayven Tallo. But disaster struck for the Cobras as Sanjo was whistled for a looseball foul off a rebound scramble, his fifth and last.
UV pounced and scored 10 unanswered points to close the gap, 61-62.
A three-pointer by guard Adams Mohammed extended the Cobras lead but UV tied the count at 65 after two free throws by Abad and a fadeaway jumper by Wowie Escosio.
Then, after a travelling violation was called on Tallo, the Lancers went ahead with a corner trey by Abad with 14.6 left in regulation. However, Monbert Arong tied the game at 68-all with a long trifecta to send the game to overtime.
Sanjo led SWU with 23 points while Arong added 16. Tallo finished with 14 assists but scored only six.
