LA SALLE swept its inaugural stint in the 2024 World University Basketball Series (WUBS) by taking down Korea University in the gold medal match, 101-86, on Monday in Tokyo, Japan.
The Green Archers swept the knockout stage which started with a 46-point rout of Perbanas Institute in the quarterfinals and an overtime escape to dethrone reigning champion National Chengchi University in the semifinals and set a gold medal showdown with Korea University.
Entering the fourth period, the game was pretty much up for grabs as the Green Archers only held a slim four-point cushion, 77-73.
But Henry Agunanne powered a 15-0 run from the Taft side as he scored six of his 25 points in that rally which turned a four-point lead to a commanding 92-73 spread.
Michael Phillips then did mop-up duties in the end game as he finished with 17 markers to wrap up their golden campaign.
Kevin Quiambao, who stole the show in all three days of the tournament, was named the MVP
There won’t be any problems with form and momentum entering the UAAP Season 87 as La Salle will carry a preseason championship treble, having won the PBA D-League, Pinoyliga and WUBS titles, while also performing great against PBA teams in the recently concluded Kadayawan Festival in Davao.
The UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball tournament tips off on Sep. 7 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
