REIGNING NCAA titlist La Salle held Jose Rizal University to just eight points in the second quarter and streaked to its third straight win, 90-52, to grab the solo lead in the PCABL 11th Freego Cup on Tuesday at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Kobe Palencia led La Salle’s well-balanced attack with 15 points on top of four rebounds, three steals and two assists as the Greenies improved their record to 3-1.
JRU slipped into a tie for second to fifth places with National University, Malayan, and Adamson – all with similar 3-2 records in the preseason tournament.
The NU Bullpups, meantime, redeemed themselves from a stinging defeat to the Red Robins the last time by downing the Baby Falcons, 82-77, thanks to the 25-point show of veteran Terrence Fortea.
Also delivering for the Bullpups were the 6-foot-7 Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano, who chipped in 14 points apiece.
Joel Sabanda led the Baby Falcons with 24 points.
University of Perpetual Help snapped a three-game slide with a surprising 90-81win over the Red Robins in the tournament backed by Choi Garden, CW Home Depot, Powerhouse and Hapee Toothpaste.
The win improved Perpertual’s record to 2-3 – the same win-loss mark of Far Eastern University which beat University of the East, 73-60.
