Kobe Paras leads world 3x3 scoring charts as PH team salvages split of first two games

    Jun 5, 2015

DEBRECEN, Hungary - Teen sensation Kobe Paras emerged as the scoring leader after the first day of the 2015 Fiba 3x3 Under-18 World Championship while leading the Philippines to a 1-1 (win-loss) record.

The 17-year-old son of former PBA rookie-MVP Benjie scored nine points in a 13-15 loss to Poland on Thursday before coming back later in the day to hit 15 in a thrilling 19-18 win over host Hungary.

That gave the UCLA-bound forward 24 points through two games in this conclave, besting the bull-strong Omar Attia of Egypt who scored twice in double digits - and 21 points in total.

More importantly, Paras and Co. stayed in the hunt for a place in the quarterfinals from Pool B, which is currently led by Poland and Russia, both unbeaten after two games.

The Philippines, which also include Michael Nieto, Richard Escoto, and Ricci Rivero, is tied with Uruguay at 1-1 while Hungary and Kazakhstan - the Filipinos' next opponent - are both 0-2.

The top two teams from the four groups make it to the knockout quarterfinals.
