Kiefer Ravena explains decision to decline spot in Seaba Cup-bound Gilas cadets side

“I wasn’t able to practice, so unfair naman dun sa iba na bigla na lang ako sisingit,” says Kiefer Ravena after Gilas practice on Thursday afternoon. Jerome Ascano

KIEFER Ravena felt it would’ve been unfair if he just let himself be included in the Gilas cadet team bound for the Southeast Asia Basketball Association (Seaba) Cup that starts next week in Bangkok.

A longtime cadet and shoo-in to the cadet team, the amateur star out of Ateneo was supposedly unavailable as he was still in Las Vegas for a personal training camp.

But Ravena returned to the country last week in time for a few practices with the team ahead of the weeklong tournament that starts on May 22.

The three-time SEA Games gold medalist nonetheless decided to give way to the other new recruits of the Cadets, who only started practice at the turn of the month.

“I wasn’t able to practice, so unfair naman dun sa iba na bigla na lang ako sisingit,” Ravena said after Gilas practice on Thursday afternoon. “Ever since, kahit gusto ko maglaro dun, yung oras lang na nandun na ako, I had to give it out.”

“Hindi lang talaga kaya isingit (yung oras), pero medyo gipit nga na kailangan nandun ako sa States to train at the same time short lang din yung pagpunta ko dito tapos sasali agad ako sa kanila,” he added.

The two-time UAAP MVP out of Ateneo also cited how hastily the tournament was announced.

“Sino ba naman ayaw maglaro para sa bansa?” Ravena said. “(It was just a) last-minute decision. Medyo biglaan lang rin yung tournament eh.”

“But players there are deserving players and I’m pretty sure they can carry the team,” he added.
