MEMBERS of the basketball community condemned the strange events that marred the Pilipinas VisMin Cup game between Lapu-Lapu City and Siquijor on Wednesday in the league's bubble in Alcantara, Cebu.
The game was marred by blown lay-ups and clanked free throws that top basketball personalities lamented put the integrity of the game under question.
The game was called off at halftime with Lapu-Lapu City leading 27-13. A media statement said the match was shelved due to a power outage in the area and will be restarted at a later date, although sources told SPIN.ph league officials ordered the match stopped due to the 'suspicious' events.
NLEX star Kiefer Ravena took to Twitter to say he was saddened by the development that was seen by many as a disrespect the game.
“Sad to see people/players playing the sport that gives livelihood to a lot of athletes. Wish they could treat it with respect and integrity,” wrote Ravena.
Mighty Sports coach Charles Tiu was also furious on Twitter after the game saw one Lapu-Lapu player shooting his first free throw left-handed, and the second one right-handed. Both shots missed.
“Seeing this video just infuriates me. I mean seriously? Respect the game. Being given a chance to make a living during this pandemic when people are jobless should not be taken for granted,” said Tiu.
Parts of the video showed players trying to bank in their free throws. Both teams ended up shooting just four out of 29 from the line, with Siquijor missing all 10 of attempts.
One player from Siquijor even blew an unmolested lay-up off a turnover.
Bacon Austria, meanwhile, was also disappointed at the development more so since the Pilipinas VisMin Cup is the only league that is being played right now amid the pandemic.
“Man, the only basketball league locally that’s going on and that’s what we’re going to see?! Let’s not waste the opportunity,” wrote Austria.
The Games and Amusements Board is investigating the matter.
