Tamayo, Sakers move up to No. 2 after win over KQ's Skygunners

CARL Tamayo and the Changwon LG Sakers pulled off a 91-79 victory over Kevin Quiambao and the Goyang Sono Skygunners in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) on Sunday at Changwon Gymnasium.

Tamayo unloaded 12 points, four assists, and two rebounds in his first meeting in Korea against his Gilas Pilipinas comrade.

The Sakers’ back-to-back wins kept them at No. 2 in the KBL leaderboard on a 27-16 record while the Skygunners dropped to 14-29 after a third straight loss.

Quiambao nabbed 15 points on 3-of-8 shooting from deep, on top of six assists, five boards, and three steals in the losing effort.

Meanwhile, Juan Gomez de Liano made a triumphant return in the Seoul SK Knights' 89-69 rout of Daegu KOGAS Pegasus at Jamsil Student Gymnasium.

Missing the last nine games due to injury, the former University of the Philippines guard logged five minutes and had three points, one rebound, and one steal for the league-leading Knights (36-8), which are on a five-game win streak.

SJ Belangel was limited to just four points to go with his six assists and two boards in 20 minutes of action for Daegu (22-21), which has now lost three straight.

Javi Gomez de Liano’s hot night also ended up in defeat as Anyang Jung Kwan Jang bowed to Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus, 81-74, on Saturday at Anyang Gymnasium.

He drilled five treys to finish with 17 points, while hauling down three rebounds for the Red Boosters, which saw a two-game win streak come to an end and dropped to 16-26.

    Justin Gutang also helped Seoul Samsung Thunders get the better of Wonju DB Promy, 83-75, at Wonju Gymnasium.

    The former CSB Blazer collected 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists for a rare Seoul victory that snapped its five-game skid to help the cellar-dwellers improve to 13-29.

    Reigning KBL MVP Ethan Alvano was held to just five points, but still notched eight assists to go with his two rebounds for Wonju (19-24).
