Not even Robert Franks' 18 points and eight boards could revive the 36ers after a slow start that allowed the Phoenix to jump to a 35-20 lead early in the second frame.
Mitch Creek was superb for South East Melbourne with his 24 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals as he doused Adelaide's repeated rallies and protected home court.
The Phoenix also got big contributions from Trey Kell, who had 20 points, three boards, and two assists, and Alan Williams who had 18 points and four rebounds. As a team, they shot 11-of-33 from deep.
Chinese center Zhou Qi tallied a double-double as well with his 11 points, 10 boards, and one rejection off the bench.
Meanwhile, the 36ers had Nick Marshall putting up 15 points, as well as Daniel Johnson and Sunday Dech having 10 each in the losing cause.
Adelaide will get six days to recalibrate before facing off against the Brisbane Bullets at home on Saturday.
