CENTRO Escolar University turned what was expected to be a close contest into a rout, beating Technological Institute of the Philippines, 72-52, on Monday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Parañaque City.
The CEU Scorpions started slow, trailing by eight, but caught fire in the second quarter and took a 45-31 halftime lead on the way to their third win in as many games.
“We just stuck to our system. The guys made several lapses on the defensive end in the early goings but they adjusted very well,” said CEU coach Yong Garcia.
Judel Fuentes scored 17 points, Christian Uri added 11 and Congolese center Rod Ebondo chipped in with 10 for the Scorpions.
Jorey Napoles tallied 16 points, six in the first frame, but he and the Engineers struggled in the end in the face of CEU’s air-tight defense.
Garcia also praised Keanu Caballero, who took over the starting spot from playmaker Orlan Wamar. Though he failed to buy a single bucket, he tallied four rebounds, three assists and as many steals.
“Orlan is far from his top form that's why I inserted Keanu to our starting lineup. I’m very proud to see him deliver. I keep on telling my players that you have to make the most of any chance given to you,” said Garcia.
