JUAN Gomez de Liano put on a scorching shooting display as University of the Philippines held off a tough PATTS squad, 84-79, in Group B of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League NCR Qualifiers, Monday at the JRU Gym.
The younger of the de Liano brothers waxed hot from beyond the arc, making eight of his 13 attempts from downtown to finish with 28 points to go with four assists and two blocks.
His red-hot performance allowed the Fighting Maroons to keep in step with the confident Seahorses which even led by two, 65-63, entering the payoff period.
The Maroons, however, turned to their defense down the stretch, with the younger de Liano getting major help from his brother Javi and Diego Dario to surge past the ISAA Champions and score a crucial victory in the qualifiers.
"Coming from the holiday break, most of my players aren't in shape yet so wala pa talaga sa kundisyon, thankfully our shooters bailed us out," said UP head coach Bo Perasol.
"It's Juan who bailed us out. Thankfully he's in great shape as he trains with the Gilas pool," he added.
Javi Gomez de Liano finished with 15 points, Paul Desiderio added 10 as Noah Webb and David Murell chipped in nine apiece.
It was a gallant stand from the smaller PATTS squad, with no player standing over 6-foot-4, who hung tough against a solid UP team.
Louis Lloyd Capinding led the Seahorses with 16 points and seven boards as Jestoni Loyola chipped in 15 anchored on four triples.
