JOSE Rizal University survived Far Eastern University late barrage of three-pointers, scoring a 71-69 win on Sunday to salvage third place in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
The Heavy Bombers were up by 11 points entering the final period when the Tamaraws hit seven of eight shots from the arc and tied the match at 69, with 11.6 seconds remaining.
Tey Teodoro drove to the basket with 1.9 seconds left to lift the Heavy Bombers.
“I told Tey to take the last shot,” said assistant coach Cholo Villanueva, who called the shots as head coach Vergel Meneses missed the game for personal reasons.
“Tey is a baller, he can drive, he can shoot, he can dribble, he can create shots for his teammates,” he added.
Teodoro had 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Ervin Grospe added 14 and Paolo Pontejos chipped in 11 for JRU.
Teodoro missed a crucial three-point attempt in the semifinal loss to San Beda, Villanueva said they trust the sophomore guard to deliver.
“Tey is a big time player everybody in the team trusts Tey to deliver for us,” said Villanueva. “Missing from the last time he learned by his mistakes,” said Villanueva.
Achie Inigo scored 14 points, while Monbert Arong added 13 for FEU.
