JORDAN Dela Paz had 22 points as Jose Rizal University limited John Abad to only 10 points in a 73-63 win over University of Visayas on Saturday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
The Heavy Bombers scored their second win in as many matches and gained a share of the lead with University of Perpetual Help in Group A, while the Green Lancers remained winless in three games.
JRU focused its defense on the high-scoring Abad, who had scored a season-high 38 points for the Green Lancers in a loss to University of San Carlos on Friday.
“I read sa newspaper ’yun, kaya in-emphasize ko na naka-38 points siya so let’s do a great job on defense,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses.
“I know he will score because nasa kanya ’yung mga touches pero we need to contain him. The guards stopped him and they did a great job kasi nagkukusa sila to stop a player,” Meneses said.
Jaypee Asuncion and Philip Mabulac had 12 points each for JRU, which will next face Southwestern University on Wednesday.
The last time JRU and SWU faced off was in a Cebu pocket tournament last month where the Heavy Bombers withdrew a fight-marred championship game.
