JAYJAY Helterbrand and Vince Hizon put on a show for Ginebra as it turned back Purefoods, 100-83, in the UNTV Cup PBA Legends Faceoff on Sunday at Pasig City Sports Center.
Coming off a six-point performance in their previous game, Helterbrand finished off with 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals for the Gin Kings, while Hizon had 25 markers, four rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block.
Ginebra evened its record, 1-1, tied with Alaska at the No.2 spot behind San Miguel (2-0).
“Last week we had a really bad showing and it was very disappointing for ourselves and for our fans,” said Helterbrand, who built his offense on 11-of-19 shooting from the field, including four triples.
“So we really want to come out here and play hard and thank God our shots were able to fall today,” added the Ginebra star, who retired from the PBA two years ago.
Ginebra put up a 25-point advantage, 71-46, riding on a big third quarter run behind the heroics of Helterbrand and Vince Hizon, who combined for 17 points in the Gin Kings’ 20-4 blast.
Three minutes left in the third quarter, Helterbrand was replaced by Pido Jarencio, who made two triples while providing the comical relief for the weary legends.
Purefoods stepped on the gas early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to 14, 67-81, but Helterbrand and Hizon again led Ginebra as they romped to a 14-5 run to widen the gap, 97-72, as the Gin Kings secured the win.
“Parang ano lang, blessings. ‘Cause last week I couldn’t hit a shot and this week was a little different and the results were different so I was really happy,” said Helterbrand.
Roger Yap had 18 points and eight rebounds for Purefoods, while Alvin Patrimonio added 16 markers and seven rebounds, Glenn Capacio made 15 points and Jerry Codiñera chipped in 14.
The Hotdogs, who came off a 68-88, loss to San Miguel, slid to 0-2.
