JASON Perkins deflected the credit for La Salle’s title victory over San Beda in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup finals, a big confidence boost ahead of the Green Archers' defense of their UAAP men’s title.
The stocky Fil-Am scored 14 points, including nine in the fourth quarter as he helped the Archers outscore the Red Lions, 23-10, during that crucial stretch to turn the match around.
Thanks to Perkins’ heroics, La Salle overcame an eight-point deficit and emerged a 71-66 winner over the reigning NCAA champion on Sunday night at The Arena.
But Perkins refused to point to his scoring ways in the fourth period as the reason for the win.
“It wasn’t just me. We were just hungry,” said Perkins after the game. “A lot of the plays came my way but my teammates did a good job in other stuff like boxing out. It was a team effort.”
Looking at the bigger picture, Perkins, who also grabbed seven rebounds, said the Filoil championship may not be as huge since it is a preseason tournament, but he stressed it helped the Archers individually especially their `bigs’ in defending San Beda’s frontcourt led by Ola Adeogun.
“It was not really big but playing against them helps you improve as a player. Ola is a physical, smart player. He has good footwork. It teaches you how to play defense,” said Perkins.
