The NLEX-SCTEX team tapped the PBA D-League champion Cignal’s core, led by Jason Perkins, in its bid to contend for the title in the upcoming Merlion Cup later this month.
Team manager Borgie Hermida bared the news to SPIN.ph on Wednesday, adding that Perkins and other key players from the Hawkeyes comprise the team in the September 20-24 showpiece.
The PBA aspirant, who declared himself available for the upcoming draft, will join Cignal teammates Andres Cahilig, Oping Sumalinog, Pamboy Raymundo, Toto Villarias, Alfred Batino, and Harold Arboleda.
Maurice Shaw will reinforce the team that will be handled by NLEX assistant coach Jojo Lastimosa.
The 6-foot-9 Shaw, undrafted during the 2006 NBA Draft, adds size to the team looking to improve on the second place finish of the import-laden Mighty Sports-Philippines side last year.
Also included in the roster are Jaypee Belencion, AJ Vitug, Mark Pangilinan, who played for the NLEX-SCTEX side in the PCBL.
Management is still looking for one more player to complete the 12-man lineup.
"Give credit also to our NLEX management like boss Mon Fernandez, boss Rod Franco, boss Chris Lizo and boss Ronald Dulatre, for giving opportunities to the players," Hermida said.
“Like what i said, these players are former NLEX-SCTEX players na always ready for call-ups and represent the company."
NLEX-SCTEX will face clubs like Shanghai Sharks, Yulon Luxgen Dinos as well as hosts Singapore Slingers in the seven-team tournament.
