JAY Washington has been released by the Ryukyu Golden Kings.
Ryukyu releases Jay Washington
The team made the decision on late Wednesday night owing to the changing format of the East Asian Super League.
"Assuming that the team will need to play in a different way from the league, we acquired Washington in order to participate in the EASL (East Asian Super League). However, EASL's scheduled league games were canceled one after another, and Washington's turn to play decreased sharply," the team said in a statement.
EASL once again changed its competition format, turning from a home-and-away series which was slated to tip off last October to now a group-oriented Champions Week to be played in Japan in March next year.
Washington, 41, was also appreciative of his time in Japan as a part of Ryukyu.
"We fought hard together and the support is much appreciated. Being a part of the Kings was an incredible experience and please continue to cheer on such a great team," he said.
Washington posted 2.2 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 assists on 5.8 minutes in the six games he played for the Golden Kings this 2022-23 Japan B.League season.
Ryukyu currently sits atop the standings with its 13-3 win-loss record.
