Carl Tamayo eyes fresh start as release granted by Ryukyu Golden Kings

CARL Tamayo looks to start the new year on a clean slate upon requesting his release from reigning Japan B.League Division I champions Ryukyu Golden Kings.

The former University of the Philippines standout expressed his desire to "explore new horizons to showcase his skills and make a more significant contribution to another team," as per Tamayo's talent agency VP Global Management.

"We believe that finding a team where Carl [Tamayo] can maximize his potential and make a substantial impact is in his best interest," the management added.

The Golden Kings have granted Tamayo's exit request as of Thursday morning (Manila time).

In his title-winning rookie campaign with Ryukyu, the 22-year-old big man logged just 2.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.3 assist in 7.8 minutes of action across 16 games played.

His now-halted sophomore season didn't see much significiant change in terms of playing time as he only had 3.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.6 assist in 12.5 minutes over 23 games.

Leaving with gratitude

Tamayo, who led the victorious Asia All-Stars in scoring (18 points) but was dropped from Ryukyu's matchday squad in the 75-77 loss to Nagoya on Wednesday evening, penned his parting note to the club that gave him his first shot at the pros.

"As I bid farewell to the Ryukyu Golden Kings, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every fan who has been with me on this incredible journey. Your unwavering support has meant the world for me," Tamayo said.

"Though my time with the team may be ending, your support will forever be etched in my heart. Thank you for making my time with the Ryukyu Golden Kings truly unforgettable," he added.
