CEBU CITY – University of San Jose-Recoletos routed University of Cebu, 85-68, for a rousing start to its campaign in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum here.
The Jaguars started off strong, scoring nine unanswered points in the first three minutes of the match to set the tone for the lopsided match.
Macmac Labares led the Jaguars of veteran head coach Jun Noel with 15 points, three boards and two steals, while Kevin Villafranca, a Mythical Five selection last year, notched a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Former Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraw Ricky Peromingan also finished in double-figures with 10.
A steal and a transition bucket by Labares along with two free-throws from power forward Nelvin Navarra pushed the Jaguars’ lead to its biggest at 70-48, heading to the final frame.
Justine Dacalos paced the Webmasters with 16 while Earl Montilla added 15.
The Baby Webmasters though, came away with a 54-49 win over the Baby Jaguars in the juniors division, behind the huge double-double of big man Froiland Mangubat who had 15 points and 24 rebounds.
