CEBU CITY – University of San Jose-Recoletos completed the semifinals cast of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday night after eliminating University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 71-58, in their quarterfinals showdown at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Jaguars’ dominant frontline proved to be the biggest factor in the blowout win, a far cry from their thrilling 75-74 victory over the Panthers during the eliminations.
The one-round semis will be made up of Southwestern University, top seed University of the Visayas, USJ-R, and defending champion University of Cebu.
Star forward Abulaiz Sulaiman and Renato Abing exploded for the Jaguars early on as they combined for 23 points and put the team in front, 34-20, at the half.
Sulaiman led all scorers with 29 points, 16 rebounds, an assist, three steals, and two block shots, while Abing added 14.
Miguel Tabaloc also did well for USJ-R with a double-double of 10 points, 13 rebounds.
The Jaguars never looked back after halftime, padding the lead to its biggest at 52-27 following a 10-0 blast in the third quarter anchored on James Regalado, Sulaiman, and Medjet dela Rama.
The Panthers rallied back and trimmed the deficit to 12 twice in the payoff period, but Sulaiman quickly extinguish the fight back by converting on four straight free throws.
Joseph Sedurifa was the lone player in double figures with 19 points for the Panthers, who finished winless in the entire season
