THE Intercollegiate 3x3 Invitationals (i3i) hope to develop 3-on-3 basketball in the college level after luring 32 teams to join the competition set on Saturday at the Xavier School and Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Tournament director Kiefer Ravena said the i3i is looking to continue the development of 3-on-3 basketball following the recent exploits of Terrence Romeo in the Fiba 3x3 world tournaments.
“Nakita naman natin ‘yung development ng Fiba 3x3. Terrence was able to show his talents at nakapag-champion pa. This is a good way to develop and showcase the talents that our college players have," Ravena said during Wednesday's press conference at The Frazzled Cook in Quezon City.
UAAP Season 78 champion Far Eastern University leads the cast of teams that will see action in the tournament, with Prince Orizu, Jojo Trinidad, Brandrey Bienes, and New Zealand native Joseph Nunag lined up for the Tamaraws.
Also seeing action is National University which has Team A of Alfred Aroga, Matthew Aquino, Reggie Morido, and JV Gallego, and Team B of J-Jay Alejandro, Issa Gaye, Matt Salem, and Matthew Pate.
NCAA champion Letran is also fielding a team in the tournament organized by Rack Sports, and supported by Mighty Sports, Akari, Mall of Asia, MyPhone, Toby’s, Titan, The Frazzled Cook, Xavier, Ambucare, and Teravibe.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has thrown its support behind the tournament.
“Last week, we met with the i3i group and it was something good because even the SBP has taken 3-on-3 as its grassroots program. Not to deviate from the 5-on-5, but ang 3x3 kasi is community-based,” said SBP deputy executive director for international affairs Butch Antonio.
