IMUS snapped a three-game skid, beating the Soccsksargen Marlins, 82-70, in the main game as ex-PBA players Chad Alonzo and former MVP Jayjay Helterbrand stepped up and rewarded new coach Mac Cuan his first win in charge on Saturday in the MPBL at the Astrodome in Pasay City.
Alonzo had a double-double performance of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Helterbrand had 14 points, seven assists and two steals as they led the Bandera to their second win in five games.
General Santos City extended its winning run in the Lakan Season, beating Iloilo United Royals, 69-64, to give head coach Rich Alvarez his third straight victory. The rookie coach has yet to lose a game since taking over and the squad improved its record to 5-2, forging a tie with expansion team Bicol Volcanoes.
Two players came away with a double-double effort for the Warriors – Rob Celiz and John Orbeta.
Celiz knocked in 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Warriors, while Orbeta tallied 13 points and 10 boards.
The Davao Occidental Tigers ripped the Bacolod-Master Sardines, 85-74, as Mark Yee and fellow ex-pro James Forrester led the reigning southern division champion to its fifth win in six games.
The Tigers joined the Bacoor Strikers on top in the southern division.
Yee had another double-double performance of 16 points and 15 boards, falling a rebound short of becoming only the second player to reach at least 500 points and 500 rebounds in the league.
Forrester and Marco Balagtas scored 16 each.
