IT was an all Iloilo show in the Visayas Regional Finals of the BEST SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament 2015 recently with Ateneo and Sun Yat Sen High School winning the titles.
Ateneo de Iloilo overcame the never-say-die University of the Visayas, 42-35, to bag the SBP title for the second year in a row, while Sun Yat Sen upended Bacolod Tay Tung High School, 71-58, to grab the Passerelle crown.
Ateneo de Iloilo went to the duo of John Vicencio and Ian Espinosa to fend off a fighting UV side.
The Ateneo up, 24-21, at the end of the third quarter, Espinosa and Vicencio launched an 11-4 run for a 35-25 lead.
Christian Alilin and Dirk Baguio countered with a 10-4 rally spiked by three triples to cut the lead to only four, 35-39, with 23 seconds left in the game.
Vicencio then canned two free throws to ensure the win with six ticks left.
In the battle for third place, St. John’s Institute downed Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas, 63-24.
In the Passerelle division title game, Sun Yat Sen went through its usual routine, slowly breaking down Tay Tung. After taking a slim 27-26 halftime lead, the Iloilo champions blew the game wide open, 52-38, behind Ervin Matulac’s 12 third period points.
It was cruise control in the fourth quarter as Tay Tung had no answer for Sun Yat Sen’s deep bench which had six players scoring in the final period.
In match for third place, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu trashed the College of St. John Roxas, 65-23.
Ateneo de Iloilo and Sun Yat Sen will represent the Visayas in the national finals of the Milo-backed tournament in Baguio on December 5 and 6. Mindanao will be represented by Ateneo de Davao in both divisions, while the NCR champions are Adamson University in Passerelle and La Salle Greenhills in SBP.
