    Hope Christian downs FEU, Chiang Kai Shek College beats Lyceum in Freego Cup

    HOPE Christian High School and Chiang Kai Shek College stayed in contention for the playoffs by upstaging their rivals from UAAP and NCAA, respectively, on Tuesday in the 9th Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League (PCABL) Freego Cup at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City.

    Marvel Jimenez scored 20 points to help Hope Christian beat Far Eastern University, 83-77, while the CKSC Dragons got 17 points from Rafael Toribio and 13 from John Galinato in a 91-78 victory over Lyceum.

    Jimenez led Hope Christian’s bristling assault, taking an early 20-14 advantage before coming through with clutch baskets to help repel FEU’s comeback.

    He completed a double-double by grabbing 10 boards to win his first Freego Player of the Game award.

    Hope Christian’s win improved its record in Group B elims to 4-2 – fourth behind unbeaten leader Adamson. Chiang Kai Shek evened its mark to 3-3 to forge a three-way tie for second with Arellano University and La Salle Greenhills in Group A.

    University of the Philippines remained on top in Group A after notching its fourth win in six games with an 88-77 win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the tournament also sponsored by Smart, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste, Insular Square Cebu, and New Pioneer Auto Supply Cebu.

    In the other game, reining UAAP champion National University crushed La Salle Greenhills, 94-69, for its fifth straight win in Group B after an opening game defeat to UP.

    Jaggie Gregorio led UP’s well-balanced attack by scoring 13 points, including two triples, while six NU players scored in double figures with Dave Careng nearly completing a double with 10 points and 9 boards.
