CEBU -- Dondon Hontiveros hopes that his services on the court would no longer be needed for the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriot's Cup.
"Opportunity sana, pero I'm thinking more of the players na kinuha ko. I think it's for them," he said on Sunday during the first leg at SM Seaside City Cebu.
Hontiveros coached Max4-Birada Cebu to a 1-1 record in the group stages, scoring a 21-11 win over MiGuard Vigan with Darrell Menina firing nine points.
It was the lone victory for Cebuano teams in the leg, and Hontiveros was proud to see Menina grab a share of the limelight.
"I was expecting that Shane would play like that," he said of the former Mapua playmaker.
"I'm very happy for Shane kasi galing siya sa Manila and he was recruited to play in Cebu. And maganda ang pinapakita niya and perfect opportunity ito for him na makilala ulit siya kung gaano siya kagaling. Hopefully in the next four legs, maging available din siya."
Menina paired up with Mark Panerio, Elmer Echavez, and Rich Managor to hoist the flag for Cebu in this leg.
Hontiveros is eager to give the Max4-Birada Cebu players the chance to shine, especially with how the public has gotten to know Rey Suerte from his showing back in the President's Cup.
"Ang gusto lang namin is exposure for the players and that's what happened, like the exposure that Rey got, that's what I want for the other players," he said.
