OF COURSE, a lot has happened in a year for Goldwin Monteverde.
Since July 27 of 2024, the soft-spoken yet strong-willed mentor guided the University of the Philippines to a redemption championship in UAAP Season 87.
On the same day in 2025, he led the Fighting Maroons into becoming the first team to three-peat in the Playtime Cares 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup.

Then in two days on July 29, Monteverde will observe the one-year death anniversary of father Remy ahead of doing the same for mother Lily on August 4.

And no question about it, the State U shot-caller is dedicating all his accomplishments to his beloved parents.
"Lagi ko namang dine-dedicate sa kanila lahat. Every game, included sila lagi sa prayers ko," he told SPIN.ph. "San man sila ngayon, habang nandito ako, I'll do my best kung pa'no itatakbo team ko, pa'no itatakbo buhay ko."
Goldwin is the youngest of five children of the Regal Films founders and movers, but paved his own path towards basketball, where he has won from the high school to the collegiate ranks.
Gold-en words of wisdom
Through it all, he has brought along the lessons learned from home: keep coming, keep fighting, keep being better.
"Habang may buhay, dapat tuloy-tuloy lang. Hindi dapat masa-satisfy, hindi dapat matatakot sa challenges kasi yun naman magpapagaling sa'tin. Ganun kami ever since sa family," he shared.

Well-known as a man of few words, Monteverde is famous for having patented statements and answers to questions - all revolving around the concept of improving day-by-day.
"Yung mindset ko kasi at yung gusto kong tinuturo sa players, lalo na't we're dealing with young men na gustong umabot sa puntong maging professionals, they have to know all about always giving your best," he said. "Galing dun, malalaman mo na how to respond sa situations."
And so, the next time you hear UP's head coach put out his trademark terms, know that its origins are of the regal sort. Those are actually life lessons he inherited from father Remy and mother Lily.
