JOSE Rizal University started is bid in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on a high note, stunning La Salle, 85-81, on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Teytey Teodoro fired 17 points for the Heavy Bombers, who dealt defending champion La Salle its first loss in the Ben Mbala era in the summer league.
Jed Mendoza and Darius Estrella had 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The Heavy Bombers got going early in the payoff period, with Teodoro dropping five straight points to spark a 9-2 run that made it 78-69.
They almost blew that advantage late in the payoff period with the Archers threatening to come back behind Aljun Melecio.
La Salle managed to pull to within a basket, 83-81, in the dying seconds but splits by Gio Lasquety and MJ de la Virgen sealed the victory for the Heavy Bombers.
"I keep telling then before this game na nothing to lose kami but everything to gain. Marami kaming matututunan sa La Salle. Nag-respond naman sila," said JRU coach Vergel Menesses.
Mbala scored 22 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and had two blocks for La Salle. Melecio had 17 points, while Ricci Rivero chipped in 13.
