THE Gilas Pilipinas Women suffered a 106-72 beating at the hands of New Zealand in their first game in the 2019 William Jones Cup in Taiwan.
Afril Bernardino had 20 points in the game while Kelli Hayes had 17 points but it was not enough as Gilas Women succumbed to a 34-point loss to New Zealand.
The Tall Ferns raced to a 25-14 lead and 59-39 advantage at halftime and never looked back.
Micaela Cocks led five New Zealand players in double figures as she had 21 points, six rebounds, and four assists for her team.
Incidentally, New Zealand will be one of the teams Gilas Women will be facing in the Fiba Women’s Asia Cup Division A from September 22 to 29 in India.
The Philippines will face Japan on Thursday.
