GILAS Pilipinas Women claimed its first win in the 43rd William Jones Cup, beating Southeast Asian neighbor Malaysia, 74-63, on Sunday at the Xinzhaung Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The Philippines recovered from its 73-60 defeat to Chinese Taipei-B to even its record to 1-1 win-loss ahead of its crucial clash with Japan on Monday.
Japan took the top spot in the team standings with a 2-0 record after beating Chinese Taipei-B, 94-42, on Sunday.

Gilas Women outscored Malaysia, 24-14, in the third quarter to pull away for good after leading seven points, 34-27, at halftime.
Afril Bernardino had 13 points, six rebounds, six steals, and two blocks, as Jack Animam added 10 points and nine rebounds for Gilas Women.
The Philippines was slightly better from threes by making six with Janine Pontejos and Kristal Yumul making two apiece. The nationals only made three during the Chinese Taipei-B game.
Gabby Ramos, one of two players from the Gilas girls team that won the Division B of the FIBA Under-18 Women’s Asia Cup, also delivered with eight points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes on the floor.
