TWITTER silence started on this day a year ago for the prolific mobile microblogger Chot Reyes and the Philippine national basketball team.
It was the eve of the tipoff of the 2013 Fiba Asia Men’s Championship and @coachot, then with over 54,000 followers, announced he and the team members are turning off their social media accounts for the duration of the tournament featuring the continent’s best basketball teams.
The Twitter world couldn’t get the news straight from the Gilas war room, but Spin.ph was there to cover the action from tournament tipoff to the final buzzer of the championship round and beyond.
On the eve of the 27th Fiba Asia Men’s Championship, Gilas Pilipinas playmaker Jason Castro and big man Ranidel de Ocampo resumed training with the national team despite being still below 100 pecent after suffering ankle injuries during a tune-up match against Kazakshtan.
Ten days later Gilas Pilipinas secured a spot in the Fiba World Cup with an 86-79 victory over South Korea in the semifinals and the day after that the Filipino cagers claimed their silver medals after losing to powerhouse Iran, 85-71.
Gilas Pilipinas recently left for Miami to begin training camp with naturalized Filipino Andray Blatche, and play in several mini tuneup tournaments in Europe, before vying for honors in the Fiba World Cup in Sevilla.
The tournament tips off August 30, and if @coachot again goes on social media silence, there will be some 115,000 followers that will miss out on news from Sevilla directly from the master tactician.
Spin.ph, meanwhile, will always be online delivering the sports news to your fingertips.
