THE Gilas Pilipinas women’s team stamped its class as it ruled the women’s division of the 2019 Red Bull Reign on Saturday at the Kerry Sports Manila in BGC, Taguig.
Afril Bernardino, Jack Animam, Janine Pontejos, and Clare Castro teamed up to emerge as the last squad standing among the eight women’s teams in the 3-on-3 street basketball tournament now on its third year in the country.
Coming off a quarterfinal finish in the Fiba 3x3 Asia Cup in Changsha, China last May, the Filipina dribblers outclassed the Zamboanga Valientes, 21-6, in the finale.
They now advance to the Red Bull Reign Global Finals in Toronto, Canada in August where the national team will represent the Philippines against 15 other nations worldwide.
“We train every day,” Animam said. “We’ve known each other for so long that our teamwork is top notch. And now, it’s a privilege to represent the Philippines in the World Finals in Toronto!”
Phenom, composed of former NCAA and PBA D-League standouts Michole Sorela, Shaq Alanes, and Junjie Hallare, alongside captain Bong Pineda, was named champion in the 14-team men’s division after holding off Basilan in the finale, 22-19.
