GILAS Pilipinas survived a flurry of three-point shooting by LSU-Baltai to pull off a gritty 90-88 win Friday night at the Svyrutio Arena in Klaipeda City, Lithuania.
The win avenged the only loss suffered so far by the Nationals in their two-week training camp in the Baltic City as part of their preparation for the Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship. They improved their record to 5-1 overall.
Gilas loss to Baltai in its previous outing, 86-89.
The national squad winds up its adjusted seven-game tune-up on Saturday when it goes up against Birstono Jazz-Diremta, a team it earlier defeated, 74-63.
“Got LSU back, but wow on their tall, quick release shooters. they were shooting over our outstretched arms. Luckily we converted on the crucial plays in the endgame,” said Gilas assistant coach Josh Reyes in his Twitter account @josh_reyes after the game.
Baltai’s sharp-shooters Arunas Sragauskis and Zygimantas Skucas combined for 11 of the team’s astounding 18 three-point baskets in the game.
Gilas won its first two tune-up matches against Klaipedos Neptunas (81-76), and followed it up with a 74-63 whipping of Birstono Jazz-Diremta.
The Filipinos then scored back-to-back wins over the Lithuanian 20-and-under national squad this week, 83-75 and 88-84.
