SINGAPORE — The Gilas cadets squad is disbanding for now, but coach Tab Baldwin said a good number of the players can be expected to reunite in the future to suit up for Gilas Pilipinas.
“We disband now. This is their last hurrah together,” said Baldwin after the cadets completed their run to the gold in the Southeast Asian Games.
“But this is the future of Philippine basketball. Someday in the not so distant future, a lot of these guys will be in Gilas uniforms.
“I look forward to that day because we have a lot of high-quality individuals, fine players. Obviously, we learned a lot from this. I’m proud of them,” he added.
He declined to mention names, noting all his cadets have the work ethic of pros and national players. And although right now the young players may be error-prone, he says he is proud of them.
“They drive me crazy sometimes with the way they play. They are young kids. They make a lot of mistakes. But they have a great passion for the game and for the country,” said Baldwin.
Gilas assistant coach Jimmy Alapag agreed.
“To see them come together for this tournament, it says a lot about them and the type of team they will be in the future,” said Alapag.
