GARY David remains hopeful of being included in Gilas Pilipinas’ Final 12 for the Fiba Asia Championship after seeing action in the national team’s 90-77 win over Chinese Taipei in the MVP Cup on Sunday.
The Meralco star, who coach Tab Baldwin listed as one of his reserves, was thrust into the active roster against the Taiwanese after Jayson Castro became a late scratch due to a minor foot injury.
“Yun naman yung papel ko: pag may na-injure, papalaruin ako,” said David, who registered three points, one rebound, and one assist in seven minutes against Taipei.
“Yun lang naman trabaho ko eh: pag open, tira,” he added. “Basta tira lang ng tira pag nagkaroon ng chance.”
And the Gilas gunner hopes he has impressed Baldwin enough to reconsider him in the final lineup.
“Hindi naman ako sinasabihan na wag na sumama,” David said. “Maganda pa rin 'yung (trato) nila sa akin. Ako naman, ready naman rin ako maglingkod sa anumang tawag.”
Baldwin continued to keep the door open for David as well as the rest of the pool members.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” the American-Kiwi mentor said. “If we start dropping like flies because of injuries, all these guys that have been in the pool come back in the frame.”
“We’re not planning to make any changes,” he added. “But we’re prepared to make changes if changes are necessary.”
