Longtime cadet Garvo Lanete glad to see Gilas finally win over Iran on big stage

    Sep 28, 2015

FORMER Gilas cadet Garvo Lanete was pleased to see Gilas Pilipinas finally pull off a huge win over Iran in the Fiba Asia Championship on Monday in Changsha, China.

A member of the Gilas squad that beat Mahram Tehran of Iran in the 2012 Jones Cup, Lanete is happy to see the national squad continue its rise from an opening-day defeat.

“Parang nabawi yung talo natin sa Palestine,” Lanete said, referring to the stunning loss to the Palestinians in the first round.

Garvo Lanete remembers clearly Gilas’ close win over a Iranian side that was without 7-foot-2 slotman Hamed Haddadi in the 2012 Jones Cup.

Lanete, one of two then cadets who made that roster along with Matt Ganuelas-Rosser, said the rare 77-75 win was very tough as they faced a tall Mahram Tehran side.

“Malaki pa rin yung team na yun kasi may tatlong seven-footers,” the NLEX rookie said in a chat with on Monday after Road Warriors practice at FCL gym in Quezon City.

The Filipino dribblers, behind then naturalized reinforcement Marcus Douthit and shooters Jeff Chan and Larry Fonacier, beat an Iranian side led by forward Samad Nikkhah Bahrami.

“Sobrang galing ni Bahrami nun,” Lanete said. “Pero ang galing ng mga shooters natin: si Jeff at Larry at si Marcus ang galing rin nun.”

Gilas went on to win the tournament where LA Tenorio emerged MVP.

But Lanete feels this latest win, an 87-73 decision, weighs much more as it moved Gilas closer to topping its group ahead of the knockout rounds in the continental qualifier for the Rio Olympics.
