CEBU CITY - University of San Jose-Recoletos turned back University of Cebu, 74-59, in Game One of their series for third place in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Winless in the semifinals, the Jaguars showed what exactly they can do with a complete lineup following the return to active duty of star forward Abulaiz Suliman and wingman Jayson Olbedado.
Suliman was sidelined with an ankle injury and failed to suit up the last time, while Olbedado missed the entire semis due to a bum knee.
With the two back in the lineup, the Jaguars raced to a 50-36 lead as Miguel Tabaloc poured in 10 points in a torrid shooting show in the third period.
But the deposed champion stayed within striking distance, 47-54, entering the final quarter.
The Webmasters were threatening, 51-54, following a long two by Val Cueva and a lay-in by Brian Heruela when the Jaguars made their telling move.
A 13-2 run on baskets from Matthew Parker inside the paint, a driving layup by Banjo Capilar, a three-pointer by Olbedado and a putback by Tabaloc that gave the Jaguars a commanding 67-53 lead with 3:36 left in the game.
Tabaloc had 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and five steals for the Jaguars, while Olbedado had 13 markers, five boards and four steals.
Cueva had his best game as a Webmaster with 15 points.
