COLLEGE of St. Benilde pounced on a Far Eastern University side that used the game to field second-stringers, rolling to a 70-48 victory on Wednesday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

With Tamaraws stars Mac Belo and Mike Tolomia playing just nine minutes each, the Blazers took advantage as they zoomed to an early lead and never looked back on the way to a surprising rout over last UAAP season’s losing finalist.

“We didn’t expect to win in a lopsided manner, but Belo and Tolomia had off games so we just capitalized,” Blazers coach Gabby Velasco said.

It was just the second in in five games for the Blazers, who handed the Tamaraws only their second loss against three wins in Group A.

Jonathan Grey spearheaded the Blazers’ attack with 23 points, five boards, and two assists in just 23 minutes, while Pons Saavedra added 14 points, seven boards, two assists, and two steals.

No one scored in twin digits for the Tamaraws, who drew eight points from sophomore guard Francis Tamsi and six points apiece from rookies Wendell Comboy and Brandey Bienes.
