Arellano Chiefs stay in hunt for quarterfinal spot with victory over hapless Mapua Cardinals

ARELLANO University edged Mapua, 68-58, on Wednesday for its third straight victory in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup in San Juan.

Kent Salado fired 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists for the Chiefs, who remained in the hunt for a quarterfinal berth with a 3-4 record in Group B.

Lervin Flores added 10 points and 20 rebounds.

Arellano opened the game with a 25-12 outburst before losing steam in the third period.

The Cardinals sliced the lead to eight but it didn't take long before the Chiefs seized control anew, this time for good.

"May mga naging adjustments lang kami in terms of how we are going to finish games and complement Salado," said Arellano coach Boyet Fernandez.

Cedric Pelayo was a rebound shy of a double-double game, tallying 13 points and nine caroms for the Cardinals, who are still winless in seven outings.

Laurence Victoria and Andrew Estrella chimed in 12 points apiece.
