UNIVERSITY of the Philippines used a big third quarter to upend National University, 73-57, on Friday and end a winless start to the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.
The Fighting Maroons went on an 11-0 run to start the third quater to open a sizeable lead on the way to their first win in four games. NU fell to 0-3 (win-loss).
“I was telling them, more than anything else, what we are trying to prepare for the UAAP are aspects of the game,” said UP coach Bo Perasol. “This is the win that we like because sometimes in preseason games, there are wins that we like, there are losses that we like also.”
“But this is a big one and doing it against a strong team like NU. We are able to test ourselves kasi ang kulang namin is ‘yung time together. We started three months ago. This is real,” said Perasol.
Paul Desiderio had 14 points while Bright Akhuetie had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Maroons, who outscored the Bulldogs, 24-11, in the third period.
John Lloyd Clemente and rookie John Galinato had 11 points each to lead the winless Bulldogs.
