CHRIS NEWSOME conspired with Kiefer Ravena and Nico Elorde in leading Ateneo to a 77-72 win over Cebu-based Southwestern University on Saturday in the Blue Eagles’ opening game of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.
In his first game in the Filoil preseason tournament following a two-year residency, Fil-Am Newsome was as good as advertised when he tallied a double-double output of 12 points and 11 rebounds including an alley-oop dunk that capped off a 10-0 wind-up to the second period.
That run gave the Blue Eagles a 32-31 lead before they pulled away in the third period when they outscored the Cobras, 28-15.
Ravena topscored for the Blue Eagles with 22 points while going 11-of-15 from the free throw line, while Elorde added 19 markers including four triples in Bo Perasol’s first win as the Ateneo head coach in the Filoil preseason joust.
Perasol acknowledged the fact that they still need time to be together and work as a team.
“I think that we have a long way to go as a team,” said Perasol. “I still could not gauge the full extent of what we can do as a team.”
The highlight of the game was Newsome’s dunk. The Fil-American from New Mexico started out a fastbreak play with a long pass to Ravena, who then lobbed the ball to Newsome for a slam at the 37-second mark of the second period.
The Blue Eagles looked rejuvenated after that as their pressing defense led to a 16-2 run midway in the third for a 57-42 advantage.
Bon Guillena led SWU with 23 points and 6-foot-11 Fabrice Siewe had 12 points but the Cobras sputtered in the end after cutting the Blue Eagles’ lead to four points in the final two minutes of the game.
