CEBU CITY - University of the Visayas defeated University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 88-75, to grab the early lead in the 2013 Enervon Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partner’s Cup on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Steadily gaining momentum in their quest for redemption following their notorious meltdown in Game Five of the Cesafi finals last year, the Prime Asia-backed Green Lancers banked on a strong start behind veteran guard John Abad to score the one-sided victory over the Lion Tiger-backed Panthers.
It was the Lancers’ second win in as many games.
Abad led UV with 14 points, all in the opening canto where the squad held a 30-15 lead, while Wowie Escosio, the league’s first and only player to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards on the same year, added 10 points - the same output as Vincent Mendoza and Alfred Codilla.
In the second game, University of Cebu scored an upset 80-74 win over the Cebu Landmasters Inc.-University of San Carlos Warriors to even its record at 1-1 (win-loss).
Kido Cabrera anchored a brilliant showing by the rebuilding Webmasters, sponsored by Gaisano Capital South, with 14 points, two assists and two steals.
USPF, UC and USC now share similar 1-1 marks.
